Kawagoe Yabusame: Traditional Horseback Archery at the National Historic Site of the Kawagoe Residence Ruins

On Saturday, November 8, the historic “Kawagoe Yabusame,” a traditional horseback archery event, will take place at the National Historic Site of the Kawagoe Residence Ruins (Kawagoe Yakata Ato) in Kamitoge, Kawagoe City. The site once served as the residence of the medieval Kawagoe Clan, who were active during the Kamakura period about 800 years ago. Set against the backdrop of this historically rich location, the event revives the spirit and traditions of Japan’s samurai culture, captivating visitors every year with its power and elegance.

The event will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., rain or shine (it will be canceled only in case of severe weather). A variety of programs are planned throughout the afternoon, offering visitors the chance to enjoy traditional performing arts, ceremonial processions, archery displays, and even hands-on horseback experiences.

From 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., traditional folk performances will take place at the Yabusame venue. The Uwatoge Folk Performing Arts Preservation Society and the Kujirai Mansaku Preservation Society will perform local dances and music that have been passed down through generations, preserving the unique cultural heritage of the region.

At 1:00 p.m., a solemn departure ceremony (Shutsujin-shiki) will be held at Joraku-ji Temple, where archers dressed in traditional armor will offer prayers for safety and success before the main event. Following the ceremony, the highlight of the day—the Yabusame horseback archery—will begin.

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., spectators can witness the thrilling display of samurai horsemanship as mounted archers gallop at full speed, shooting arrows precisely at targets. The rhythmic pounding of hooves and the sharp sound of arrows hitting their mark recreate the atmosphere of medieval Japan, offering an unforgettable experience of traditional martial skill and spirit.

Finally, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., a horseback riding experience will be available for visitors. This popular program allows both children and adults to interact with the horses and experience the world of Yabusame firsthand, making it an enjoyable and educational activity for the entire family.

Access to the venue is about a 15-minute walk from Kasumigaseki Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. As parking is limited and traffic congestion is expected, visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transportation. For those arriving by car, parking is available at Uwatoge Sports Park (approx. 100 spaces) and the Kawagoe City General Health Center (approx. 100 spaces), though these lots tend to fill up early in the day.

As autumn deepens and the foliage begins to change color, this event offers a perfect opportunity to experience the beauty of the season alongside the rich history and culture of Kawagoe. Come and witness the skill, precision, and spirit of the samurai brought vividly to life through the Kawagoe Yabusame.
